Bet Types Odds & Value Bookmaker Terms Strategy

Bet Types

1X2

The most common football betting market. 1 = Home Win, X = Draw, 2 = Away Win. Also known as Match Result or Full Time Result.

Accumulator (Acca)

A single bet that combines multiple selections. All selections must win for the bet to pay out. Higher risk but higher potential returns.

Asian Handicap

A handicap betting market that eliminates the draw outcome by giving one team a head start. Quarter-goal handicaps (e.g., -0.25, +0.75) can split stakes across two lines.

Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

A bet on whether both teams will score at least one goal during the match. Can be Yes or No.

Double Chance

Covers two of three possible outcomes: 1X (home win or draw), X2 (draw or away win), or 12 (home or away win). Lower odds but higher probability.

Draw No Bet (DNB)

A bet where your stake is returned if the match ends in a draw. You only win or lose — no draw outcome.

Each Way

Two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet. Common in horse racing. If your selection wins, both bets pay out; if it places, only the place part pays.

Handicap Betting

One team is given a virtual advantage or disadvantage. For example, Team A -1.5 means they must win by 2+ goals for the bet to win.

Over/Under (Totals)

A bet on whether the total goals in a match will be over or under a specified number. Over 2.5 means 3+ goals needed.

Correct Score

Predicting the exact final score of a match. High odds due to difficulty but popular for football.

First/Last Goalscorer

Betting on which player will score the first or last goal. Bet is void if the player doesn't participate.

Half-Time/Full-Time

Predicting the result at both half-time and full-time. For example, Draw/Home Win means draw at HT and home win at FT.

In-Play (Live Betting)

Placing bets during a match while it is being played. Odds change dynamically based on match events.

Parlay

American term for accumulator. A single bet combining multiple selections where all must win.

System Bet

A combination bet covering multiple accumulators from a selection of events. Pays out even if not all selections win (e.g., Trixie, Yankee, Lucky 15).

Odds & Value

Decimal Odds

Odds format showing total return per unit staked. Odds of 2.50 means £1 stake returns £2.50 (£1.50 profit). Most common in Europe.

Fractional Odds

Traditional UK format. 5/1 (five-to-one) means £5 profit per £1 staked. 1/5 means £0.20 profit per £1 staked.

American Odds (Moneyline)

US format. Positive (+150) shows profit on $100 stake. Negative (-150) shows stake needed for $100 profit.

Value Bet

A bet where the bookmaker's odds are higher than the true probability of the outcome. The foundation of profitable long-term betting.

Expected Value (EV)

The average amount you would win/lose per bet if the same bet were repeated many times. Positive EV (+EV) bets are profitable long-term.

Implied Probability

The probability of an outcome as implied by the bookmaker's odds. Decimal odds of 2.00 implies 50% probability (1/2.00).

Overround (Vig/Juice)

The bookmaker's built-in profit margin. A fair market totals 100%. An overround of 105% means 5% margin for the bookmaker.

Odds Movement

Changes in odds over time due to money coming in on one side, team news, or other factors. Sharp bettors monitor these movements.

Opening Odds

The first odds offered by a bookmaker for an event. Often compared with closing odds to identify value.

Closing Odds

The final odds just before an event starts. Considered the most accurate reflection of true probabilities.

Best Odds

The highest odds available across all bookmakers for a specific outcome. Odds comparison sites help find these.

Bookmaker Terms

Arbitrage (Arbing)

Exploiting different odds across bookmakers to guarantee a profit regardless of outcome. Requires placing bets at multiple bookmakers.

Bankroll

The total amount of money set aside for betting. Proper bankroll management is crucial for long-term success.

Bookmaker (Bookie)

A company that accepts bets and sets odds. Licensed bookmakers are regulated to ensure fair practice.

Betting Exchange

A platform where bettors bet against each other rather than against a bookmaker. Betfair is the largest exchange. Users can both back and lay.

Back Bet

A standard bet FOR an outcome to happen. Placing a back bet on Team A means you profit if Team A wins.

Lay Bet

A bet AGAINST an outcome. Only available on exchanges. Laying Team A means you profit if Team A does NOT win.

Stake

The amount of money wagered on a bet. Fixed staking and proportional staking are common strategies.

Return

The total amount received if a bet wins, including the original stake. Return = Stake × Odds (for decimal odds).

Void Bet

A cancelled bet where the stake is returned. Occurs when events are postponed, players don't participate, or specific conditions are met.

Cash Out

Settling a bet before the event finishes at a price offered by the bookmaker. Allows locking in profit or minimizing losses.

Free Bet

A promotional bet offered by bookmakers. Winnings are usually paid minus the free bet stake.

Gubbing

When a bookmaker restricts your account — limiting max stakes, removing bonuses, or closing your account. Usually happens to profitable bettors.

Sharp vs Square

Sharp bettors are professionals who exploit value. Square bettors are recreational. Bookmakers track and often limit sharps.

Matched Betting

A technique using free bet promotions and exchange lay bets to guarantee profit regardless of outcome.

Strategy

Closing Line Value (CLV)

Whether you beat the closing odds. Consistently getting better odds than closing is the best indicator of long-term profitability.

Kelly Criterion

A mathematical formula for optimal bet sizing based on edge and odds. Full Kelly is aggressive; most bettors use fractional Kelly (25-50%).

Flat Staking

Betting the same amount on every bet regardless of confidence. Simple and effective bankroll management strategy.

Yield

Your profit as a percentage of total stakes. A 5% yield means £5 profit per £100 wagered. The best metric for betting performance.

ROI (Return on Investment)

Total profit divided by total stakes, expressed as percentage. Positive ROI means profitable betting.

Staking Plan

A systematic approach to determining bet sizes. Examples: flat staking, percentage staking, Kelly criterion, Fibonacci.

Tipster

A person or service that provides betting tips/predictions. Always verify track records with independently verified results.

Unit

A standard measurement for bet sizing. Typically 1-2% of your total bankroll. Allows comparing performance across different bankroll sizes.

Edge

The advantage you have over the bookmaker. If true probability is 40% but odds imply 35%, your edge is 5%.

Poisson Distribution

A statistical model used to predict the probability of goals in football matches based on historical scoring rates.
